CORPORATE SERVICES

The Regional District System
Regional districts are British Columbia’s way of ensuring that all residents have access to commonly needed services no matter where they live. Established in 1965, B.C.’s regional form of government is one of the most innovative in Canada. The regional district functions as a partnership of the municipalities and electoral areas within its boundaries. These local governments work together through the regional district to provide and co-ordinate services in both urban and rural areas.

The services offered by regional districts in B.C. are as varied as the landscape itself, including fire protection, emergency programs, recreation facilities, libraries, as well as water supply and waste disposal systems.  Regional districts are very diverse and their populations range from 2.1 million people in the Greater Vancouver Regional District to Central Coast Regional District with just under 3,200 residents.
